10 Best Moving Tips When Moving Locally

For many, moving out of your hometown can be one of the most stressful things to do, but it doesn’t have to be! With so many things to remember and check in on don’t forget to check in on yourself and your mental health! If you find yourself overwhelmed with stress we have some helpful tips on how to take a step back and reduce your anxiety for your big move!

1. Plan ahead

Moving out of your hometown isn’t a cut and dry event, it requires plenty of planning and organization. Make sure you are reducing your stress by planning ahead of time, researching qualified movers in your area, and preparing what you intend to sell before the move. This step is crucial to keeping your mental health in check, rushing around last minute can make a move far more stressful than it needs to be.

2. Start small

The moving process can seem daunting, but don’t stress yourself out by looking at the big picture – break it down into bite sized pieces! Start by planning out small steps of your move, organizing what you want to get rid of, looking at hotels or stops along the way, etc. A move is far easier to handle and less stressful when looked at as a bunch of little tasks instead of one giant project.

3. Be flexible with your plans

A part of the moving process is understanding that everything will not always go according to plan, so be prepared to have back ups and alternatives for certain steps. It is easier to go with the flow if you have planned ahead and allotted plenty of time for your move.

4. Clean ahead of time

One of the most looked over factors is cleaning your home/apartment when moving out! While this seems like a very quick task and unimportant in comparison to packing, it can quickly be overwhelming when time hasn’t been set aside for it. It happens too often that everything gets packed up and ready to go with excitement at an all time high and then bam – no energy to clean afterwards!

5. Enjoy the trip!

While it is normal to be sad about leaving your hometown you get the excitement of experiencing an entirely new place! These trips can be especially enjoyable if you have a road trip to an area you have never been to!

6. Sell & Donate

When you are packing you will begin to discover how many items you have that you have never used or that you don’t need. That’s totally ok! You have options when it comes to these types of items but packing all these unnecessary items is not one of them. You can always give away items to friends and families, donate these items or sell these items to help lighten your load!

7. Properly Label Your Boxes

Properly labeling can make both your movers and your lives a lot easier. Properly labeled boxes can help your movers understand the priority and sensitivity of your items which will help them organize your items safely in the truck. When you get to your new home, having your boxes properly labeled will also make your life a lot easier by helping you find what you need.

8. Pack An Essential Box

This box is important for you moving day and your first night in your new home. It should contain items you consider necessary for your stressful day your first night you will be spending in your new home.

9. Make A Layout Of Your New Home

If you decided to hire a local moving company that charges hourly, it would be in your best interest to organize and layout where you would like your furniture ahead of time. This will save you time and money so the movers can know exactly where to put your larger items and when they leave you can decide where all the smaller items go.

10. Keep Cleaning Supplies Separate

You wouldn’t like it if someone left your new home looking like a complete mess so don’t leave your place a mess for someone else. Keep your cleaning supplies separate so you can straighten up your home before leaving it for good. Also if the previous owners of your new home weren’t as courteous as you, you can use these cleaning supplies to straighten up before and after the movers arrive.
